HOMEOWNER GUIDE

PLANNING YOUR ARTIFICIAL TURF PROJECT

What affects the cost

Square footage is the starting point, but the ground underneath shapes the job. Removing existing grass and roots, hauling soil, grading slopes, fixing drainage and building a compacted base all add work. Curves, borders, edging, tight side yards and areas that need a wheelbarrow instead of equipment take longer. The turf product itself also varies by blade height, density and backing.

Choosing turf and infill

Shorter, denser turf stands up better to foot traffic and play; taller blades look more like a lush lawn. Infill sits between the blades to weigh the turf down and help it stand up. Common options are silica sand, coated sand and infills made to reduce pet odor. For homes with dogs, a fully permeable backing and an odor-control infill help the area drain and stay fresh.

Why the base matters

A typical installation removes several inches of soil, lays a crushed-rock base, and compacts it with a slight slope so water drains away from the house. A weed barrier and secure edges keep the surface flat and tight. Skipping base work is the main reason turf ripples, puddles or smells.

Water and the Orange County climate

Southern California's dry summers and water-use rules make turf appealing for many Orange County yards. It doesn't need irrigation or mowing, though it does need an occasional rinse and brushing. Some homeowners keep planting beds with drip irrigation around the turf for a softer look.

How to prepare

Mark sprinkler heads, valves and buried lines you know about, and decide which irrigation zones should be capped. Clear patio furniture and play equipment. Most residential yards take a few days, depending on size and access.

FAQ

TURF FAQS

How long does artificial turf last?

Quality turf lasts many years with basic care. The base and drainage underneath matter as much as the turf itself.

Is turf safe for pets?

Yes, when it's installed with proper drainage and a pet-friendly infill.

Do you remove the existing lawn?

Yes. Removal, grading and base prep are part of the job.

Does artificial turf get hot?

Yes, turf can get noticeably hot in direct afternoon sun. Lighter-colored blades, some infill types and shade all help, and a quick rinse cools it down on hot days.

Do I need a permit for artificial turf?

Turf usually doesn't need a building permit, but some cities and many HOAs have front-yard landscape rules. Check with your HOA before you start; we can provide product details for an approval request.

Is the assessment really free?

Yes. There's no cost and no obligation to hire us.

Do you offer financing?

Ask us at your assessment and we'll walk you through the options available for your project. Financing is subject to credit approval.
