HOMEOWNER GUIDE
PLANNING YOUR PAVERS & CONCRETE PROJECT
What affects the cost
Area and shape come first, then what has to come out: removing old concrete, grass or soil adds demolition and hauling. Driveways need a thicker base than patios because they carry vehicles. Slopes, steps, curves, borders, drainage work and access for equipment all change the scope, as does the paver or finish you choose.
Pavers, concrete and stone
Concrete pavers come in many shapes and colors, and a damaged section can be lifted and reset. Permeable pavers let water drain through the joints. Natural stone such as travertine is popular around pools because it tends to stay cooler underfoot. Poured concrete can be broom-finished, stamped, colored or given an exposed-aggregate look. It usually costs less up front but can crack, and repairs are harder to hide.
Base, soil and drainage
Most paver failures start below the surface. Proper excavation, a compacted aggregate base, edge restraints and correct joint sand keep pavers from sinking or spreading. Parts of Orange County have clay soils that swell when wet and shrink when dry, which is one reason base depth and drainage matter. Every surface should slope away from the house so water never runs toward the foundation.
Permits and HOAs
Driveway approaches and work near the street usually need a city permit, and some cities limit how much of a front yard can be paved. Many HOAs review hardscape plans and materials. We check the rules before we finalize the design.
How to prepare
Plan where cars will park during a driveway project, since new concrete needs time to cure before it carries vehicles. Mark sprinklers and buried lines, and think about future needs such as lighting or a gas line so conduit can go in before the surface does.

FAQ
HARDSCAPE FAQS
Pavers or concrete: which is better?
Pavers are easier to repair and offer more design options; concrete usually costs less up front. We'll price both if you're unsure.
Do you do driveways?
Yes, along with patios, walkways and pool decks.
How do you keep pavers from shifting?
A properly compacted base, edge restraints and correct joint sand.
Do I need a permit for a new driveway?
Often for the part that meets the street. Work in the public right-of-way, such as a new or widened driveway approach, usually needs a city permit. Patios and walkways on your own lot often don't, but rules vary by city.
Should pavers be sealed?
It's optional. Sealing can deepen color, resist stains and help hold joint sand in place, but it needs to be renewed over time. We'll explain the trade-offs for your surface.
Is the assessment really free?
Yes. There's no cost and no obligation to hire us.
Do you offer financing?
Ask us at your assessment and we'll walk you through the options available for your project. Financing is subject to credit approval.
