HOMEOWNER GUIDE

PLANNING YOUR FLOORING PROJECT

What affects the cost of new flooring

Square footage and the material you choose set the starting point. Removing the old floor, especially glued-down flooring or tile, adds labor. Subfloor work is the other big variable: grinding high spots, filling low spots, repairing damaged plywood or treating a damp slab. Stairs, intricate patterns, many rooms and transitions, new baseboards and moving appliances or furniture all add to the scope.

Hardwood, vinyl, laminate and tile compared

Solid hardwood can be refinished many times but doesn't suit wet areas or most slabs. Engineered hardwood has a real wood top layer over a stable core and is a common choice over concrete. Luxury vinyl plank is waterproof, quiet with the right underlayment and easy on the budget. Laminate is durable and scratch-resistant, with some water-resistant lines. Porcelain tile is very hard-wearing and suits kitchens, baths and entries.

Subfloor prep and older homes

Most flooring problems start underneath. A floor that isn't flat will flex, click or crack at the joints, and a slab with moisture can damage wood or cause adhesive to fail. In older homes, some vinyl tile and adhesives contain asbestos, so older floors may need testing before removal. In condos, HOAs often require sound-rated underlayment.

Orange County climate

Coastal humidity and dry inland summers make wood expand and shrink with the seasons, so wood flooring is acclimated and installed with expansion gaps. Rooms with big sun-facing windows can fade some finishes over time; window coverings help.

How to prepare

Clear small items, rugs and anything breakable from the rooms. Tell us at the assessment if you need help moving large furniture or appliances. Doors may need trimming for the new floor height. Most rooms take a day or two; whole-house projects take longer.

FAQ

FLOORING FAQS

What flooring do you install?

Hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, laminate and tile.

Do you remove old flooring?

Yes. Removal and subfloor prep are part of the job.

Do I need to move my furniture?

Tell us at the assessment and we'll plan for it.

Can flooring go over a concrete slab?

Yes. Many Southern California homes are built on slabs. Luxury vinyl, tile and engineered hardwood all work over concrete when the slab is flat and checked for moisture.

Which flooring is best for kitchens and bathrooms?

Tile and luxury vinyl plank handle water best. Some laminates are water-resistant, but standing water can still damage them. Solid hardwood isn't a good fit for wet areas.

Is the assessment really free?

Yes. There's no cost and no obligation to hire us.

Do you offer financing?

Ask us at your assessment and we'll walk you through the options available for your project. Financing is subject to credit approval.
