HOMEOWNER GUIDE
PLANNING YOUR INSULATION PROJECT
What affects the cost
Attic size and how easy it is to move around up there set the baseline. Removing old insulation that's damaged, compressed or contaminated adds labor and disposal. Air sealing, adding baffles at the vents, and building up to a higher R-value (the measure of how well insulation resists heat flow) each add to the scope. Walls cost more to insulate in a finished home than during a remodel, when they're already open.
Insulation types compared
Blown-in fiberglass and cellulose are the most common attic materials because they fill irregular spaces evenly. Fiberglass or mineral wool batts fit between studs and joists in open framing. Spray foam seals and insulates in one step and is used in specific spots. Each has its place; most attics are best served by blown-in material over a sealed ceiling.
Ventilation and safety
Insulation should never block soffit vents; baffles keep air moving through the attic ventilation system. Older recessed lights that aren't rated for contact with insulation need clearance or replacement. Very old knob-and-tube wiring has to be evaluated before insulation goes over it. Some cities require a permit for insulation work, and we check before we start.
Why it matters in Orange County
Summer sun can push attic temperatures far above the outdoor air, and that heat radiates into the rooms below. Inland homes feel it most, but even coastal houses with thin insulation have hot upstairs bedrooms. Good attic insulation also helps a new AC or heat pump do its job.
How to prepare
Clear the area under the attic hatch and move anything stored in the attic that's in the way. Most attic jobs take a day or two.

FAQ
INSULATION FAQS
How do I know if my attic needs insulation?
Hot upstairs rooms, high cooling bills and thin or uneven attic insulation are the usual signs. We'll look and tell you.
Do you remove old insulation?
Yes, when it's damaged, compressed or contaminated.
Blown-in or batts: which is better?
Blown-in insulation fills around joists, wiring and odd spaces and is common for topping up attics. Batts suit open framing and walls during a remodel. The right choice depends on the space and what's there now.
Should the attic be air sealed first?
Usually, yes. Sealing gaps around light fixtures, pipes and top plates keeps air from bypassing the insulation, and it's much easier to do before new insulation goes down.
Is the assessment really free?
Yes. There's no cost and no obligation to hire us.
Do you offer financing?
Ask us at your assessment and we'll walk you through the options available for your project. Financing is subject to credit approval.
