What affects the cost of a bathroom remodel
Size and layout set the baseline. Keeping the toilet, shower and sink where they are is the simplest path; moving drains or walls adds plumbing, framing and permits. Tile is a big variable: large-format tile, intricate patterns and full-height walls take more time. Custom glass, niches, benches, heated floors and upgraded fixtures add to the scope, and hidden water damage or old piping found during demolition can too.
Materials and options
Porcelain tile is durable and resists water. Natural stone looks rich but needs sealing. Solid-surface or quartz panels give a shower fewer grout lines to clean. Vanities range from stock sizes to custom builds, and floating vanities make a small room feel larger. Whatever is on the surface, a properly waterproofed shower underneath is what keeps a bathroom dry for years.
California codes and permits
Permits are typically required when plumbing, electrical or walls change. California sets water-use limits for new toilets, showerheads and faucets, so new fixtures will be the low-flow kind. California's green building code generally calls for a humidity-controlled exhaust fan in bathrooms with a shower or tub, and outlets near water need GFCI protection. Older homes may also need galvanized supply lines or cast-iron drains replaced once the walls are open.
Timeline factors
Demolition and rough plumbing move quickly; tile, inspections and custom glass take the most time. Shower glass is usually measured after tile is finished, so it adds a short wait at the end. Choosing selections before demolition starts keeps the project from pausing.
How to prepare
